Comparative Methodologies in the Commentary Tradition of Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhī: An Analytical Study of Selected Works

Abstract

The tradition of commenting on Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhī, a seminal hadith compilation by Imam al-Tirmidhī, has generated a diverse body of scholarship that reflects multiple interpretive frameworks and methodological orientations. While these commentaries remain central to the study of hadith, systematic examinations of their underlying approaches are still limited. This study explores the methodologies employed in three major works—Tuhfat al-Ahwazī, Qūt al-Mughtazī, and ‘Āridah al-Ahwazī—with the aim of identifying their interpretive principles, scholarly priorities, and distinctive contributions. Employing a qualitative, document-based design, the research applies comparative content analysis to assess structural patterns, thematic emphases, and analytical strategies across the selected commentaries. The results reveal both points of convergence, such as shared reliance on linguistic and juristic reasoning, and significant divergences, including variations in emphasis on isnād evaluation, theological discourse, and juristic synthesis. These findings demonstrate the methodological pluralism inherent in sharḥ al-ḥadīth and highlight the epistemological breadth of hadith hermeneutics. The study not only enhances understanding of interpretive diversity within hadith commentary but also emphasizes the pedagogical and scholarly value of situating these works within their broader intellectual and historical contexts. Future research is encouraged to expand the scope of analysis to other canonical collections, thereby offering a more comprehensive picture of the evolution and complexity of hadith commentary traditions.
